"You cannot lose by bad deeds what you cannot gain by good deeds."
This is a thought provoking way of saying that you and I cannot make it to Heaven on account of our good deeds because becoming one of God's children is a free gift of grace:
But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:21-24 NIV)
Just as we cannot pass the Heavenly gates with an impressive resume of good deeds, we are not barred on account of sin and evil deeds contritely confessed and repented of.
No matter how good I am, I am acceptable because of my belief in Jesus, not because of my good deeds.
No matter how evil I was before I repented of my sins and turned my life over to Jesus, I am acceptable. And so are you.
